SMALL HYDROELECTRIC
In the US, the small hydroelectirc market has been widely overlooked, predominately due to the negative stigma associated with all hydroelectirc activity. This perception is a result of the consequences that have arisen from the mature large hydroelectirc market. For this reason, many sites remain available for development and many existing facilities are available for acquisition, which can then be aggregated to achieve economies of scale.
We have selected small hydroelectirc as the first channel of focus, as the operational and technical risks are low and installations run for up to 50 years+. With the capital requirements modest, at approximately $1.2 million / MW installed, this combination will allow Principle Power to bring greater leverage to bear on increasing the returns. The first Principle Power projects will be run-of-river, small hydroelectirc plants in the Pacific Northwest. The team has already evaluated and selected a number of appropriate sites - on which further due diligence and permitting assessment will be conducted.

In the US, large-scale hydroelectirc has nearly reached maximum capacity. Hydroelectric dams, while still being built in centralized developing economies such as China, are no longer seen as cost efficient or environmentally acceptable, due to factors such as natural habitat destruction and fish migration. However, small-scale hydroelectirc has much headroom for growth. Low-impact hydroelectirc allows for significant energy generation and follows standards that protect or mitigate factors against major environmental impact. Such solutions in hydroelectirc are plentiful, including low impact run-of-river, tidal turbines and ocean wave energy.
